[...] Superman Returns: I’m really just throwing these last two on the end here. I mean, if I saw The Departed, I’m sure it would be at least number three or four. I did find I still liked this when I picked up the DVD, but my initial enthusiasm has worn off somewhat. [...]

[...] Superman Returns was my most anticipated movie of the Summer and my initial review was probably a little more glowing than it should have been. I will say it made for some good blogging fodder here and over on BBn, even though Jason lost some of my comments due to a technical glitch. I am looking forward to seeing it again on DVD to see how it stands up, and yes, I will be buying it. I am going to readdress my Top 5 Comic Book Movie List after recently watching both Spiderman flicks (can’t wait for three next year!). [...]

[...] All-Star Superman #5 Holy crap Batman! The Superman book has actually taken the lead in the shipping schedule despite debuting at least a month after the Batbook. According to Jim Lee, it’s all his fault and not Frank Miller’s, but whatever. This is about the excellent Superman book penned by Grant Morrison and penciled by Frank Quitely. I think I mentioned this book in my Superman Returns review because it is just an excellent read and an easy way for someone to jump into a Superman book. Morrison is breaking it down to the core of what all the Superman cast of characters represent and Quitely is producing some excellent visuals. This ish features Clark visiting Lex Luthor in jail to get an exclusive interview. A prison riot ensues and Clark must protect Lex, and others, while Lex believes he’s protecting Clark just so he can get his story out. There are several scenes that provide good laughs. I think my favorite thing about this book so far has been the difference between Clark and Superman. I think this book more than any other I have ever read does this so well that you almost forget they are one in the same. This is in large credit to Quitely’s art, but also to the Morrison’s writing. I’ll buy this book until they are off the title and only then if it starts to suck. I’m a big fan. [...]

[...] I got myself into a bit of a fracas with Jason over at BBn earlier this week — okay, this past weekend — with respect to fanboys. I seem to have found myself bashing the Momma’s basement dwellars when it comes to defending this Summer’s Superman Returns. You can read more about that over on the BBn post, but it did get me thinking on continuity in comics. [...]

I guess I just found them so...well, bombastic is really the only word for it. Or maybe it was just the retro feel...as crazy as the opening sequences of, say, <em>X-Men</em> and its sequel were, SR just seemed like a John Phillips Souza halftime show. Also, it's important to note that the opening credits really imply that Singer wants his film connected with the earlier ones, so I still say he has only himself to blame for any inconsistencies people note between the first two and this film.

There were things I liked about SR, but for me it was no <em>Batman Begins</em>.

Yeah, looks like you beat me on length and quality!

I am not sure why you think the opening credits have to do with the tone of the film. I mean, they're not really part of the story. Well, I guess, sometimes they are, but I thought it was a nice nod to the past even if they seemed a bit out of place in 2006.

Haha--the funny thing is, my review of SR is even longer than yours. I'll have it up tonight.

Suffice to say, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as you did. But I'll let the review speak for itself and just make this one comment...

<em>The opening titles and music. Yes, I am not even kidding. The original John Williams score was used and the titles were a slightly updated throwback to the original movie’s vector graphic looking titles that zoomed at you. It was just well done and it set the tone for what would come.</em>

I'm afraid I couldn't disagree more. The bombastic and <em>very</em> 1970s opening couldn't be more at odds, in my mind, with this solemn, somber picture. It promises fun and adventure; the film offers the cinematic equivalent of the Crash Test Dummies' "Superman's Song."

Of course I know who David Hayter is! Didn't know he did the EA thing, but now that I play it in my head, a yup, gotta be him. I wonder if they'll use that script now that they have Zak Snyder on board.

Quick hit (as I'll write on my own Blog):

Did you know David Hayter is Solid Snake. Google him? He's also the voice of "EA SPORTS - It's in the game." And he's written the current script for Watchmen.
