It was preemptive measures against copyright suits. It just goes to show that the Google guys have way too much money to blow. As for YouTube, I just keep wondering when someone's really going to go after them for copyright issues, <em>a la</em> Napster. What's amazing, though, is that YouTube was founded in February '05 and went live the following summer. Maybe Google will have buyer's remorse, but I bet those three dudes who founded it are laughing all the way to the bank.
