Once upon a time I was the movie critic for the largest collegiate daily newspaper in the continental US - the UMASS Daily Collegian - and now I struggle to provide a list of 5 flicks seen in theaters in 2006. That's what fatherhood will do to you - especially when you are still in those early formative years. That and the fact that the theatrical experience largely sucks now that we have the ability to tune out the audience chatter and perfect the picture quality in our own homes.

All right - enough about all that - on with my list (top 3 - I'm leaving spots open for the other 2006 flicks I'll catch on DVD including The Prestige, The Departed, Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, Borat and others from which I should be able to find 2 additional flicks to complete this list).

1. V for Vendetta - I raved about this on my site - called it one of the Top 5 Comic Book Flicks as well as one of the Top 5 Flicks That Made this Grown Man Cry (it's during the Valerie scene when the parents toss the pic of an infant Valerie into the trash - the very idea of that just hit me in my 'father' bone).
2. Casino Royale - Best Bond flick ever largely becuase Daniel Craig is the best Bond ever. All that campy, hammy BS has been trimmed - in its place comes Craig as a 'blunt instrument' who over the course of the flick is honed into a sharper image. As with Batman Begins, this is the way to reboot a franchise.
3. Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest - Simply put, this is the most fun I had at a movie this year. This was the epitome of summer blockbuster and reminded me of times when summer movies were fun (think the great Spielberg era - Indiana Jones, etc). That last minute reveal of a surprise 'hero' sent goosebumps. Can't wait to rejoin Jack at 'World's End'.

I, too, would have to include V for Vendetta on my list of top movies. The Departed could be my number one choice. I thought Leonardo was amazing (and no, I'm not typically a fan of him or his movies). Matt Damon was good too, but his Boston accent was really annoying (totally overdone for someone who is actually FROM Boston). Great cast!
