Year in consumables: 2007 music

Yeah, I know I said I was going to name this post “Year wax,” but a funny thing happened with that; I realized I came up with a regulah name for this stuff last year. I was searching for the one I remembered writing about music and there it was. Funny what happens when you search your own archives.

Anyway, I decided to keep with the naming convention, just because I like the way it ties things together. I did consider going with a convention based off “Year (something),” which would allow me to use “Year wax,” but I couldn’t figure anything good for gaming and movies. Best I had was “Year smax” and “Year flix” respectively, and those are, well… lame.

On with the scheduled programming…

Lemme see here… this past year, I purchased (!) 56 discs and an unknown amount of iTunes albums. I want to say it was like four or five, but I don’t track them and I should since you can’t fight the future. This total was a lot less than last year (by more than half!) and most likely years previous. I think one reason for that is I have been a lot better about previewing discs before b... The Block is Hot

My little weather.com doo-dad says it is 90° today, which is I think the first time that has happened this year. Of course, with all the rain we’ve had lately, who can really remember? At least we finally have a nice weekend and it allowed me to put the top down and pull the doors off the Jeep for a couple days.

However, today I am sitting cooped up inside waiting to test something for work that may or may not be happening. At this point, 2.38pm, I am thinking it either didn’t happen and they didn’t notify my group or they are having troubles and not providing an update. Anyway, I am sweating my t!ts off in my home office and I thought about that title up there.

The title is the title of epsiode 14 in season 1 of The Boondocks. Not only is it a successful newspaper comic strip, but it is also an animated series on the Cartoon Network’s [adult swim]. The episode guide describes:

Jazmine learns the true meaning of “Capitalism” when she sells her lemonade stand to corporate tycoon, Ed Wuncler.

Wuncler is voiced by Ed Asner, so that’s pretty cool. In fact, several actors lend guest voices to dif... Continue reading »

Kurt

Twelve years ago today, Kurt Cobain’s body was found. Hard to believe it has been that long.

Nevermind was the the first grunge album I purchased and I got it on January 19th 1992. Yeah, a little late to the party considering it was released September 24th 1991. I purchased 11 other CD’s in the time between and, with the exception of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, I can say the other 10 are crap compared to Nevermind. I won’t recount what those discs were now, and not out of embarassment either. I will fess up that the other disc I bought that day was the soundtrack to JFK. Little did I know both “front men” would die of gun shots to the head.

As I remember it, Nirvana was the band that really kicked off the whole grunge thing and forced it into the mainstream. Yeah, there were other bands before Nirvana — Soundgarden, Mudhoney, The Melvins, Mother Love Bone, Alice in Chains — but not with their commercial success. To be honest, all those bands probably benefited from Kurt “selling out,” except maybe Soundgarden who had released Badmotorfinger around the same time and were making their own way. Okay, and maybe Cameron Cro... Continue reading »
