Summer Shudder

Nantucket Sound Sunset Well, the title of this post should have been the title of the previous post, but I just wasn’t paying close enough attention. A lot of the time I try to come up with clever titles that play on words and stuff like that and I am sure I am not in the minority there. Look no further than Ed as he consistently comes up with great title posts. Then you have Jason, who usually has me running straight for dictionary.com.

However, when I’m not feeling clever, I try to find a song title that fits my posting topic in some way. Well, I got stuck on Consumed Summer because I was going to write about stuff... Continue reading »

Fanboy Fodder 9.1

X-Men: Phoenix: Warsong #1 cover (Silvestri version)Quite possibly the first week ever that I read all the books I picked up. I’m sure it has a lot to do with only buying six books total. I resisted the urge to pick up G.I. Joe: Scarlett Declassified. While the Snake Eyes Declassified mini was good, I don’t think this one would be as good and especially not for $5 a pop.

Out of curiosity, and a Michael Turner cover, I picked up Justice League of America #0 which must have a come out a few weeks ago. It gave quick clips of JLA history, but wasn’t easy to understand if you don’t know it, so I think they failed in their goal because I didn’t get it. Then again, they did get my money, so maybe they succeeded…

X-Men: Phoenix: Warsong #1 The first issue in a five issue mini that looks to pick up where the Endsong mini left off… I guess. You can see the Marc Silvest... Continue reading »

Fanboy Fodder 8.5

All-Star Superman #5 coverIt’s a week five write-up, so that usually would mean a light week in terms of number of books out, but that wasn’t the case. What is/was the case is half the books purchased could not be read due to my behindness on Civil War. I’ll get around to catching up, hopefully soon because TV and Xbox 360 games are fast approaching to capture my attention from the waning baseball season.

To be honest, I am actually not all that interested in writing about comics from this past week, but I have to keep up with this, so here’s a half-hearted shot for the six books I did read. I did have a hard time choosing between running the cover for X-Men or All-Star Superman, so I went with both, but Supes at the top since I ran an X-book last week.

All-Star Superman #5 Holy crap Batman! The Superman book has actually taken the lead in the shipping schedule despite debuting at least a month after the Batbo... Continue reading »

Fanboy Fodder 8.4

Astonishing X-Men #16 coverI have decided that this little experiment with writing about the comics I read has been a good idea. It is definitely forcing me to evaluate what I am buying on a weekly basis. I was already trying to be good about tracking how much I spend a month on this stuff, but that wasn’t cutting it. I could justify it by acknowledging the fact that I don’t spend money on much else besides comics and CDs.

Now, I have to justify the purchase on the strength of its entertainment value. I am sure I will slowly be subtracting books, but this week, I did not. In fact, I found I just had to buy Justice League of America #1 because it was written by Brad Meltzer (of the excellent Identity Crisis) and illustrated by Ed Benes (Superman/Batman). Didn’t I recently state that I hated DC books and no more new ones for me? Well, this one is an exception that you knew would happen eventually.

I did skip Heroes for Hire #... Continue reading »

Fanboy Fodder 8.3

Hunter-Killer #6 coverI may have done something today that I haven’t done since my college days in Wichita. I went out to the comics store, picked up my books and read them as soon as I got home. This used to be standard practice while in school out there. After all, what else was there to do? In fact, some of us used to read our books in class as we’d go just before class.

Then again, back in the early nineties, the comics scene was pretty exciting. Nowadays, not so much. There was a nice surprise from Marc Silvestri in that Hunter-Killer #6 finally came out. He was one of those can’t-miss artists of that time that left to form Image Comics (and Top Cow). Maybe that was why I read them right away. It was either that or I had nothing else to do…

Hunter-Killer #6 This is one of those books where you think it was cancelled for some unknown reason. High profile artist Silvestri), good art, good writer (Mark Wai... Continue reading »

Fanboy Fodder 8.2

Wolverine: Origins #5 (Joe Q cover)I am going with that title for now. “Fanboy” because I feel like one for writing even the shortest of short reviews about the comics on which I blow my pesos. “Fodder” because only other fanboys would find these thoughts even remotely interesting. The eight dot two is simply short for week 2 of the month of August. Due to the way I set up my bloggy blog, I have to use a unique name for each post within a given month, plus it just enhances the geek factor.

Maybe I can get in some good debates with someone and make this little corner of the blog worth it. If not, my fanboydom will forever be pasted on the Internet. Anyway, let’s get the geekery over with already…

Wolverine: Origins #5 Such a cool cover… with nothing inside to back it up. Well, that’s a little too harsh, but it was utterly stupid until the end, which convinced me to give t... Continue reading »

Superman Returns

Superman Returns teaser posterI am having a hard time deciding how I want to write this up, so I’m just going to start writing and see what happens. I have stated before that I don’t care if I spoil things without warning or not in my reviews, but I actually gave it a thought while watching Superman Returns. On one hand, I want to throw out what I thought about everything, but that means spoilers. On the other, I want to preserve the experience for anyone who has not yet seen the film.

Okay, after writing that first, it seems obvious what I have to do… spoil everything, but I’ll at least warn you. Yeah, I think you are down with that and I’ll try to keep the spoilage towards the end so that you aren’t just reading this fluff at the top.

Whoa, wait… speaking of fluff — allow me a quick tangent — I found a number of interesting Superman posters while googling for the ... Continue reading »

Blog Days of Summer

I can tell by the way the past two weeks have gone that it is going to be tough to post on a regular basis. Actually, maybe I just need to redefine what a regular basis is going to be for the Summer.

Yeah, that’s what needs to happen, so based on how it has gone since it *officially* turned Summer, we’ll go with the one post a week schedule. I think it’s a thing going around, you know? Ed and Jason seem to have it too and those Scoobs have it year ’round. Of course, there could be Asides added at any time in between, but not much has really caught my eye as of late, although I did just post one about being Pearl Jammed.

You’d think I had all kinds of stuff going on since it was so nice out and all that, but the... Continue reading »

Perfect Dark Zero

Perfect Dark Zero boxWhen the first wave of Xbox 360 games, the launch titles, were announced, it was pretty much assumed that this game was going to be the 360’s Halo. The game was hyped up as the one that would sell the system and I remember Microsoft used this game as their feature in that overhyped and ultimately empty MTV special that aired just before the 2005 E3.

I haven’t played any of the previous games in the Perfect Dark series, so I can’t base this *review* of Perfect Dark Zero (PDZ) on anything other than this game. I suppose in terms of gameplay, I can compare it to Halo somewhat, so here goes…

I made it thru the training level and then the first level before I decided it wasn’t worth it. I say it wasn’t worth it not because of the game, but because the achievements just weren’t going to come. I... Continue reading »

Mission:Impossible III

not a M:i:3 poster

A few things come to mind as I start to write this one:

  1. I am going backwards with my reviews, but I figured for completeness sake, I’d do it that way since the other one I am going to write about is V for Vendetta.
  2. Ed is starting to get me in the habit of posting pictures with my posts. I hate the two posters out there because one has too much Tom Cruise and the other has his name too big, plus it’s just a wee bit ugly. However, I decided I needed a picture! Found this one that someone did up as a wallpaper. Works better.
  3. I need to come up with some kind of format for my reviews, observations, thoughts or whatever I want to call them. Maybe I ought to tell you how I felt about it right up front and then get to the meat because I am always going to have spoilers. I’m not here to write up some fancy review that is going to dance around plot details in an effort to tell you what I think without telling you exact... Continue reading »
