Spambino ale
I prefer my April Fool’s jokes to be something that actually fools people, or rather, me, but that can be pretty hard when you read everything on the day with a grain of salt. That said, some are better than others in trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Anyway, I wasn’t going to follow up my previous aside with anything when I wrote it, but after a night of drinking tonight, I feel the need. So, let me start with what I culled from the internets today, and believe me, I wasn’t looking real hard, or really, at all…
- Google has a joint venture with Virgin to colonize Mars in an open source way named Virgle
- Gmail has a cool new feature to send e-mail back in time called Custom Time
- Closer to home, Poe Ghostal had a less obvious gag — I liked it even if he didn’t — going about his seemingly forever-never-to-be-delivered DC figure
- The Xbox Microsofties got one out there that I ran across today (added 4/2)
This morning, the Sandbox on FNX was playing Great White and I wondered why — I thought maybe it was part of “My Song Is Better Than Your Song” — but I figured it... Continue reading »
Three se7ens
Not sure why I feel compelled to post something today. I mean, it is cool that today is 07.07.07 and all, but does that mean I need to acknowledge that with a post?
This is a post, so I guess so, but how to acknowledge it exactly? I mean, I can’t just post this and be on my way, can I?
I suppose I could, but I did have one little idea. I thought, maybe since there are three sevens, I’d do three lists of seven. And, since it is Summer, maybe have one list be of things I have enjoyed so far, another of things I have not and finally, the third of things I am looking forward to over the rest of the Summer.
Yeah, that works and it gives me a chance to fill in some blanks since I haven’t posted much lately. Of course, it hasn’t been officially Summer for but three weeks, but we all know we started thinking it was way earlier than what the solstice tells us, right?
Anyway, here goes nothing:
Seven up
- Transformers Yup, just saw it today and I’m leading off with it. Even if you are not a fan, of them or Michael Bay, it is just a good old fashioned Summer popcorn flick. Go see it.
- Beckett and Matsuzaka Seeing these two... Continue reading »

RO-GER, RO-GER, RO-GER!
Can you hear it now?
I had been formulating a post in my brain since the minute I heard the news of Roger Clemens going back to the Yankees, but I didn’t have time to pump it out.
Then, Ed beat me to the punch last night, so I was content to simply post a comment there. But, as I started writing, I realized there was no way I could express this as a comment, so I had to bang out this. I had to add a post to the Clemens fire in the Blogosphere.
I was listening to the Sox game on Sunday afternoon when Castiglione, or that new clown — not Dave O’Brien, the other guy — announced the Rocket made an appearance on the Yankee Stadium jumbotron. Ed and I had just taken in Spider-Man 3 and were headed back to his house for some beer and burgers, so when we stopped at a packy to pick up the beer we had a quick chat as we peeped our choice of brew.
We were traveling separately, so when I got out, the first words out of my mouth were to ask if he heard the news. As we walked thru the door, I followed up with a comment about Pettitte offering [insert disgusting reference here] to his buddy if he’d come to... Continue reading »
Ignoring it is bliss
Oh little blog, how I have ignored you these past couple weeks… and boy has it been great. Not feeling pressured to write a damn thing to bore the masses with endless drivel, just like this post.
Are you bored yet?
Don’t worry, you’ll get there. I already am, but reflect on the fact that blogging is now 10 years old. Consider how many boring blog posts have been posted over that time! See my latest aside for more.
Of course, there are numerous reasons I haven’t blogged lately, the first being the continued drama of being a fantasy baseball league commissioner, especially when said league includes a Mookie. I have spent many a late night over the past week tending to my little baseball league that barely can. However, light is at the end of the tunnel now, so time is freed up to blog a bit.
So, continuing to riff on the baseball, and real quick mind you as many of you care less, I just want to point out a couple things. One, no matter how old men get, they are still big babies and will gather up their toys and go home when things don’t go their way. Two, men define fairness for what backs up their point slash opinion and eve... Continue reading »
Mmm… beer
So, I was catching up on my Hotmail, aka my spam box, and Harpoon shared the fact they have produced their first new, year-round beer in nine years. It’s Harpoon Brown Session Ale.
The web page shares the same basic info as the e-mail does, but the e-mail included an explanation of exactly what the heck a Session Ale is, so here you go:
What is a “Session” beer?: According to the BeerAdvocate.com - “any beer that contains no higher than 5 percent ABV (alcohol by volume), featuring a balance between malt and hop characters (ingredients) and, typically, a clean finish - a combination of which creates a beer with high drinkability. The purpose of a session beer is to allow a beer drinker to have multiple beers, within a reasonable time period or session, without overwhelming the senses or reaching inappropriate levels of intoxication. (Yes, you can drink and enjoy beer without getting drunk.)”
Since their link to the Beer Advocate done not work, I headed on over there to track it down myself, but no joy after a couple minutes. Apparently, in order to search the site, I need a login and that’s jus... Continue reading »
Towel. Thrown.
As blog is my witness, the towel has now officially been thrown.
You may remember that Ed and I were to go to the game last night (Sunday) and so we did. We arrived to the Fenway area about 2 1/2 hours before gametime so that we might get a bite to eat and enjoy a few brews at Boston BeerWorks. Well, the line for the place was insane, so we headed over to Game On. This worked out pretty well as we walked right in and the wait for a table was only an hour. Probably the same wait at BBW, but it would have taken us a good 20-30 minutes to get in the door. Thus, I suffered thru drinking Corona instead of Haymarket Hef.
Fast forward to game time and in we go. The seats I thought we had weren’t the seats we had. You know how the right field corner goes and the seats point towards center field scoreboard? Yup, those were the ones… right on the aisle that goes diagonal, so the next section over looks more towards the field, but we were pretty high up. Probably the third last row in the boxes, but remember, these used to be grandstand seats. Thankfully there was enough legroom for my long sticks.
From a certain point of view, the seats were good in that they w... Continue reading »

This is kind of a sad story. It would seem that the Budwater bastards have bought Latrobe Brewing Co., the makers of Rolling Rock. While I haven’t been drinking it for the last few years, I was still a fan and would have one from time to time. I think I’ll stand with the natives of Latrobe and boycott the NJ brewed version.
This Week in OB1og
Yeah, it’s been a little over a week since my last post and I apologize, but it is not like there has been any public outcry/outrage over it. I don’t even have a good excuse except that maybe I didn’t feel like sitting in front of the computer after getting home from work all week. Instead, I watched the Sox sweep the Mets, which is something I haven’t done much of this year. Well, no one had watched them sweep the Mets yet; I mean watch the Sox on TV. I think the Orsillo Cam is brand new and, quite frankly, it frightens me.
So, the idea of this post is to catch up on this week’s activity, much like This Week in Basball does and a bit like Ed just did over on The Ed Zone.
I guess I’ll start with last Saturday because I can’t remember further back than that and it’s also the day after I posted Flickr pictures of Portland Rose Gardens that apparently no one bothered to view except for Ed and someone else. Of course, it’s hard to tell because Flickr only has counts for individual photo page hits and not photostream page views, so if you view the gallery photostream pages only, then I must ask why? Okay, so many photos are fine to look at that way, but most of the... Continue reading »
The Break-Up
Have you ever been smacked in the face while watching a movie?
No, I am not talking about that time your wife/girlfriend walked in on you watching… well, you know. I am talking about experiencing something being shown on the screen so closely, so clearly to situations or events from your life that it is spooky. That is this film for me.
This isn’t the first time either. No, I think the first time was while watching Swingers that first time. Spooky how Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau starred in that one as well. Oh, then there was Trainspotting, but that was only when I went toilet bowl diving for my smack.
No, seriously, Swingers and now The Break-Up. Swingers being mostly about a guy climbing out of a break-up and The Break-Up being about getting yourself into one. Other than that and the two lead actors, all similarities end there.
The Break-Up wasn’t exactly what I expected, so I suspect it will be the same for you. The trailer makes it out to be a comedy, but I didn’t find myself laughing much outside of what was in the trailer. No, it was a gut-wrenching and sad story about two people suddenly split apart and how they each deal ... Continue reading »
More Manny Being Manny
So I went to the Sox game again last night and they unfortunately lost to the Spankees despite another poor start by Randy Johnson. A highlight for the Sox was Manny continuing his hot streak by swatting two homers to make 4 in 3 games against the Yankees.
Hopefully this has quieted his critics who, prior to the series, were complaining that he has been unproductive despite being second in the league in walks and having a higher average at this time than last year when he also had a slow start. However, everyone wants to point at his higher strikeout rate and lack of home runs and RBI. Of course, as I write this, he’s 0-3 with a BB against Tampa…
Truth be told, he’s off to a great start this year as far as I am concerned. He’s been playing a great left-field and running out of the box. Okay, so there was one night I remember he had a bad baserunning blunder and yes, last night he ran thru a stop sign by Hale, but still scored safely. Then, everyone was up in arms about him styling after hitting a bomb Tuesday night off Proctor.
Well, I guess someone said something to him about it because last night he dropped the bat both times and ra... Continue reading »
